And how! February brought with it some lovely ice storms and then a beautiful snow to frost on top of it. Last Tuesday, we woke up to the promised Arctic Blast of 2011, and realized we were going to be inside for at least a few days. The ice was layered at least an inch thick and in some places 2 inches. And it was FAHREEZING cold. Icy, chill to the bones cold! So we settled in our cozy clothes and took advantage of having to be no where, at any time. Looking back, it was totally God's way of saying to us "slow down" and to enjoy each other. I don't remember being this busy as a child (probably because I was a child and don't memories of when I was 3), but it seems like life has gotten so busy for us. It was such a blessing to have two days in a warm house, with plenty of food together. When I realized we would be staying indoors for an extended period of time, I was worried we were going to go crazy, but we didn't. We just had quality time together and Luke and Reid had a blast playing together. I will say by Thursday we were ready to venture out, but a trip to the mall playground and Chick Fil A for lunch cured the ants in our pants and we were happy to come back home. Friday brought loads of snow (4-5 inches), so we snow-suited up, except we don't have snow-suits. I"m totally hitting up consignment stores so I'll be better prepared for next year. Fleece and snow don't mix. They cling to each other like magnets to metal. But we still had a blast playing outside and then coming in and stripping down...only to go out a couple of hours later and do the same thing again. Thank goodness for washing machines, because we had a LOT of clothes to wash with all the layers we were wearing. We had a few rolling blackouts that totally freaked Luke out. It wasn't so much the power going out as it was it coming back on. When the power would turn back on, our alarm system went off for 5 seconds max. Long enough to send Luke into a frenzy, clinging to every limb I have. Reid of course, seeing the panic in Luke realized it was a moment of distress and the tears rolled for him too. I tried not to laugh about this situation, because they truly were afraid of this loud noise suddenly going off, but I did chuckle a little. The most memorable moment was when we were finishing up breakfast and Luke was bringing his plate to me to wash. Of course the alarm went off as he was in route and the plate, and leftover scrambled eggs went flying. Poor guy! Eggs are really hard to clean up by the way. I had tears after this happened because I was laughing so hard. I promise I don't delight in my children's fears, but I have a really hard time not laughing when people get startled. I really need to work on this.
And what do you do when you're not playing the snow? Make forts of course!
After our 4 days of winter weather, we got a lovely weekend break, only to have another snow/ice storm hit the following Wednesday. Thankfully we were only out of commission one day, and back to school the next. As lovely and memorable as this weather was, I'm excited with the promise of spring and warm weather. I'm dying to get these boys to the Arboretum for some pictures!
